Stainless steel is one of the most common materials in custom sculpture. Clients often ask: what is the difference between 304 and 316?
Basics
304 (18/8) contains about 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It machines well and suits most indoor and outdoor city environments.
316 adds 2–3% molybdenum (“marine grade”) and performs better in chloride-rich settings such as the coast.
Recommendations
- 304: Ordinary city outdoor works, interiors, and budget-sensitive projects.
- 316: Coastal, humid or industrial sites, fountains, and long-life landmarks.
316 costs about 20–30% more in raw material but can cut maintenance in corrosive environments.
